KPMG Dynamic Risk Assessment

KPMG: Dynamic Risk Assessment
BRAND:  KPMG
CREATIVE AGENCY: Somewhere Else
OUR ROLE: Spatial Sound Design, Music Production & 3D Audio Post Production

KPMG’s Dynamic Risk Assessment (DRA) was developed to identify, connect and visualise risk in four-dimensions. Combining the latest in applied science with insights from management and extensive benchmarking, DRA modelling allows audit professionals to see where risks can be expected to form, arming them with new levels of risk assessment that work to enhance audit quality.

In order to explain the DRA model history, mechanics and benefits to internal stakeholders and clients, KPMG required an innovative experience to engage viewers while being memorable and accurate. This took the form of a VR experience that included rich 3D animations, archive footage and a holographic tour guide in the form of KPMG’s Global Lead of DRA, Andries Terblanché.

At 1.618 Digital we created a soundscape and music to immerse the viewer in the experience without distracting from factual, engaging content.

Barber Shop Chronicles

BARBER SHOP CHRONICLES: Theatre Play
BRAND:  National Theatre
PLAYWRIGHT: Inua Ellams
PRODUCTION COMPANY: VR City
OUR ROLE: 360° Sound Recording, Editing and Dubbing

Inua Ellams is a UK-based poet, playwright and performer. He was inspired to write the Barber Shop Chronicles by the barber shops near his home in Peckham, which reminded him of his childhood in Nigeria. These barber shops are often filled with men until the early hours of the morning, as this is where they go to open up, socialise and share stories. The Barber Shop Chronicles invites us into the rich lives of these men in Lagos, Johannesburg, Harare, Accra, Kampala and London.

Set in-the-round, this play perfectly lends itself to be recorded as a 360° video, allowing the viewer to be in the centre of the action. At 1.618 Digital we recorded the live sound of this play in 360°.

This dynamic play ran in the National Theatre from the 20th of November 2017 until the 9th of January 2018.

While performing the procedures on a patient, Prof. Karbanda explains how the team carries out an angiogram to assess the size and seriousness of a blockage. He then goes on to explain and demonstrate how they carry out an angioplasty and insert a stent to widen an obstructed artery.

We were assigned the interesting task of recording the live 360° sound in the laboratory during the procedures. These videos were created to inform patients and others of what to expect in a catheter lab and provide great insight into the procedures.

Find Your Way Out

HOUSE OF US: Immersive Maze Installation ‘Find Your Way Out’
BRAND: The Diana Award / Facebook
CREATIVE AGENCY: Livity
OUR ROLE: Binaural Sound Recording, Sound Design, Audio Post-Production

The 1.618 Digital team recorded binaural audio for an immersive experience that allowed people to feel what it’s like to be on the receiving end of bullying. Facebook teamed up with the Diana Award and Childnet to give students in the UK the skills to stay safe online. They aim to train a digital safety and anti-bullying ambassador in every school in the UK.

The two-day House of Us interactive exhibition was mainly aimed at children. It brought the consequences of bullying to life and exposed the challenges that young people can face online.

We provided the sound for ‘Find Your Way Out’, an audio maze designed to show how isolated and lonely people can feel when they are being bullied. This included stories of being bullied and the insults that people are exposed to.

A 360º View Of A Baby’s First 1,000 days

A 360º VIEW OF A BABY’S FIRST 1,000 DAYS: 360º Video
BRAND:  Unicef
PRODUCTION COMPANY: Happy Finish
OUR ROLE: Sound Design, Bespoke Music Production, Audio Post-Production

Future health and happiness are established by a child’s environment and experiences during the early years of life. The first 1,000 days of a life are the most significant for a child’s development. If a child is malnourished, treated poorly, under-stimulated or not properly protected during this time, development can be seriously affected, sometimes irreversibly.

In the early years, most energy from food is used for brain development. During this time, neurons in the brain form new connections at an astounding rate that is never repeated in a lifetime. Playing, singing and talking with children helps them form positive bonds, sparks brain connections and allows them to explore the world and learn from it.

For nations, not investing in early moments in children’s lives results in poorer health, fewer learning skills and reduced earning potential. This leads to a weaker economy and a greater burden on health, education and welfare systems.

We’ve created an emotional soundtrack for the 360-degree educational video depicting the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. This video touches upon the key aspects of early life that affect a child’s brain development and demonstrates that these early moments matter for every child.

Discover Laphroaig

DISCOVER LAPHROIAG: 360º Distillery Tour
BRAND:  Laphroaig
PRODUCTION COMPANY:  VR City
OUR ROLE: 3D Audio Recording, Sound Design, Bespoke Composition, Audio Post-Production

Laphroaig understands that not everyone can make the journey to visit their beautiful hollow by the bay and so invites viewers on a spectacular 360º tour of Islay, the small Scottish Island that is home to their distillery.

We journey through the rugged, remote island while learning about the production of the most complex of all Scotch whiskies. The journey begins with the patient cutting of peat by hand. The turf, slowly compressed over thousands of years, infuses the whisky with a medicinal tang. Next, we journey to the Kilbride stream that has flavoured and softened the spirit for 200 years.

Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries left that malt by hand. We see the seven golden tonnes of barley that will be turned by hand over seven days. Next, we hear the crackling of the kiln while the smoldering peat flavours the barley beyond compare. As the north Atlantic waves crash against the warehouse walls, we see the barrels that are left to infuse Laphroaig Whisky with velvety flavours of oak and vanilla.

The 1.618 team was tasked to capture the sounds of the natural environment to support the narrative where earth, water, fire and air combined create a whisky that is as breathtaking as the environment that it comes from. We created a tone that blends atmos, score and sound design seamlessly into one immersive soundtrack that uncovers the story of Laphroaig Whiskey.
